WW2 L Baker Custom Fighting Knife -US WWII Combat Dagger Collection/Leo—ID’d ‘44

This fine combat knife is stamped on the blade ‘L. BAKER’. The handle is made of leather. This knife has a steel guard, and a lead pommel. This knife measures 12 1/4” overall. A WW2 Baker is a seriously effective combat knife. The blade itself measures 7 1/4″. Leo Baker made his knife blades out of files. This knife shows the file grooves.
The scabbard is correct for WW2 Bakers. The top of the sheath is stamped ‘227’. The soldier that carried this knife marked his initials on the front of the sheath ‘R.B.’.
There are some really cool features on this knife. The back of the sheath suggests that this knife was either a gift to the soldier (he may have even been a medic or a doctor), or that guys signed on the back of the sheath send-off well wishes. I can read “BEST WISHES FROM ALL HURRY BACK LT. COL. O.L. KANN DR. N. PINTOZZI LILLY’S INSPECTOR CHAS. KRAATZ YOUR INSTRUCTOR 3-1-44”.
An ID’d knife is of special interest to collectors.

1 U.S. World War 2 4″ Richtig fighting knife. This rare, small Richtig boot knife would make an important addition to any U.S. military or world militaria collection.
This knife was made by a legend in knife-making. Frank Richtig had a secret steel tempering process that allowed him to slice through railroad spikes and automobile leaf springs. Frank would demonstrate this at county fairs–after slicing a railroad spike or leaf spring, he would slice through a piece of paper with the same knife. Frank earned himself a spot in a ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’ magazine in the 1930’s. These knives can be used for decades, because of Frank’s superior craftsmanship.
This knife measures just 8 3/16″ overall. The blade itself measures 4″. This Richtig fighter is stamped ‘F.J.R. CLARKSON NEB.’. The guard and pommel are brass. The pommel has an extended lanyard ring.
The scabbard is ID’d on the back ‘1942 BULLOCK’.
