USMC ID’d! 1967 Vietnam War Gerber Mark II Fighting Knife -MkII Combat/Collection 004580

USMC ID’d! 1967 Vietnam War Gerber Mark II Fighting Knife -MkII Combat/Collection 004580
$0
1 U.S. Marine ID’d Vietnam War ca.1967 Gerber Mark II fighting knife. This early combat knife would make an important addition to any collection.
This Gerber is serial number ‘004580’. This Mark II serial number dates this knife to 1967. The Marine etched his name on one side of the guard. It looks to read ‘D. Hirte’. The reverse side of the guard is etched ‘USMC 2182919’. This vet’s service record is researchable since his name, branch, and serial # are on his knife.
The sheath has the 2-line Gerber stamp, and the right-hand keeper strap. The sheath houses the Gerber sharpening steel.

1 vintage U.S. Vietnam War Seven Inch Recon combat knife by Japan Sword. This is one of the rarest SOG knives–arguably the rarest, as this appears to be one of the early Prototypes. Mike Silvey points out in his book SOG Knife Collector on page 13 of another seven inch recon, “A retired CIA operative brought this knife back from Vietnam. It was recognized by Ben Baker as one of a few prototypes provided during the process of selecting the seven inch recon knife.”
This rare SOG fighting knife would make an exceptional addition to any collection.
This knife came to me with no sheath.
The knife blade measures 6 7/8”. Note the zoomed in photos of the natural irregular aging striations in the white spacer below the guard.
Two photos above are from Mike Silvey’s book pgs. 8 & 13. They are provided here for reference.

US Vietnam War RVN 1918 Mk2 5th Special Forces Trade Trench Fighting Knife

US Vietnam War RVN 1918 Mk2 5th Special Forces Trade Trench Fighting Knife
$0
This knife was originally purchased by a collector from Frank Trzaska. Here is Frank’s description of this knife:
On page 190 of MILITARY KNIVES, A REFERANCE BOOK, “For the lack of a better name I’ll call this knife the RVN 1918 Mk2, as it consists of parts from both the 1918 Mark 1 Trench Knife and the Mark 2 USMC Fighting Utility Knife. This knife was the brainchild of a select group of the 5th Special forces members. While the first knife was produced as a weapon for actual use, the following knives were produced strictly for trade purposes.” I purchased this knife in 2008. Most of these hard to find knives have found their way into the hands of serious collectors and rarely come up for sale. Two things make this knife slightly different from the few others that were made. First the backside of the guard is usually cut away so that the knife can lay flat on the sheath. The guard on this handle was not altered. Instead the sheath was molded to fit the larger guard. The second difference is that the blades on most of these special forces trade knives were Mark 2 blades. This one was made from what must have been a new Pal RH 36 blade. It still has all its original Parkerizing. The sheath was made for this knife and has the attachment for the US pistol belt. This is a very rare piece. Don’t miss this opportunity.
