The fuchi and kashira are a matching set. The fuchi features Samurai shoulder armor and a mempo (face armor). The fuchi is signed ‘Soten‘. The matching kashira is made in the shape of a Samurai kabuto (helmet). The menuki are fu dogs. The tsuba/guard is a Tenbo stamped tsuba. Some of the stampings are Japanese kanji/letters.
This katana has a nice long blade. The blade measures 27 7/16″ (69.7 cm) from blade tip to notch in the blade spine.
The nakago/tang is unsigned. The original Samurai wood saya/scabbard has a leather combat cover over it. In addition, the kashira/pommel fitting has a sarute loop. So this Samurai sword was carried during World War 2.

Papered SOSHU HIROMASA Antique Russo-Japanese War/WW2 Samurai Army Officer Sword

Papered SOSHU HIROMASA Antique Russo-Japanese War/WW2 Samurai Army Officer Sword
$0
1 ca.1492-1501 A.D. Samurai sword in Russo-Japanese War Army Officer Kyu-gunto mounts available. This sword was carried by true Samurai. This fine antique Japanese Army Officer’s Kyu-gunto sword would make an important addition to any collection.
This sword is papered to godai (5th Generation) Soshu Hiromasa.
This 15th/16th century sword was carried by Samurai–then was remounted for carry during the Russo-Japanese War. This sword was then later carried during World War II as well. The blade of this sword measures exactly 23 7/16″ from blade tip to the bottom of the notch in the habaki (measured properly without holding the tape to the curved spine). This sword is mounted in premium kyu-gunto military mountings. Note the black same/rayskin grip.
This sword has fine horimono/carvings on each side of the blade. Each side also has a bohi/blade groove.
This Samurai sword has a fiery hamon w/ashi (‘flying temper’). The hamon is very complicated. Holding the blade at a different angle under light reveals character that wasn’t visible at the previous angle. Turn the blade again, and yet new activity is visible. Utsure can be seen in this fine blade. The sword fittings have a gold wash.
This tsuka/handle backstrap bears a Samurai family mon.

Photos 4 & 5 above are images from Jim Dawsens book. These images show that this sword is a textbook example of the Mongol Military Government sword.
All military fittings are of excellent quality. Note the unique horizontal stripes on the flag cantons on the backstrap. As well as the rare Mongol symbol on the backstrap ears and backstrap.
The blade measures 25 3/8″ (64.5 cm) from blade tip to notch in the blade spine. This sword has a traditional nihonto blade.
It’s not known whether this sword is signed. It looks like years ago someone took off the pommel nut–but the scratch marks on the brass created by removing the nut have patinated since then, so I don’t want to create bright new marks on the nut to find out.
